ABOUT THE K.GE REED MAKING (PROFLING) MACHINE AND ITS DIFFERENT TYPES OF PROFILES
This recently developed product has the capability to both profile and make final adjustments to oboe reeds. With a variety of slightly different templates available to suit the needs of each individual oboist, it is a product that has already revolutionised the art of reed making for those who have already purchased and mastered the use of this machine.
For those who prefer a short or European scrape, there are four varieties of templates available, with slightly different capabilities.
The F-15: A French style profile suitable for cane gouged with a C/S ratio of 0.15 (quite thick sides). This template is also suitable for profiling cor anglais/English Horn reeds, when the machine is slightly reconfigured to allow for the scraping of cor anglais reeds.
The G-15: A German style profile also most suitable for cane gouged with ratio of 0.15 (quite thick sides) and also suitable for profiling cor anglais/English Horn reeds. The difference from the French profile is that there is a little more cane in the “heart” of the reed and a more dramatic slope into the tip from the “heart”.
The F-18: A French style profile for cane gouged with a C/S ratio of 0.18 – 0.20, which means cane that is gouged to be more thin on the sides. Mostly suitable for oboe reeds only
The G-18: A German style profile for cane gouged C/S ratio 0.18 – 0.20 and also most suitable for scraping oboe reeds.
For those who prefer a long scrape or American style scrape, there are four varieties of template.
US #1: A US long scrape profile with “windows” for cane gouged at C/S 0.15 (which means cane gouged at the thinner end of the spectrum on the sides for this type of scrape)
US #2: Our most popular long scrape template, with “windows” and for cane gouged at 0.10 (for cane gouged more thickly at the sides)
US #3: A long scrape profile that does not include “windows”
US #4: A long scrape profile that cuts less cane and allows more room for “hand finishing” and is also more suitable for scraping cor anglais/English Horn reeds when the machine is slightly reconfigured to allow for this.
*The C/S ratio is the differential in measurements between the centre of the gouged cane and the side measurement. For example, if a piece of cane is gouged at 0.60mm in the centre and it is 0.45 on the side, it has a C/S ratio (differential) of 0.15. Therefore a piece of gouged cane measuring 0.60 in the centre and 0.42, it has a C/S ratio of 0.18, meaning it is thinner on the sides than a gouged piece of cane with a C/S ratio of 0.15
